Omega Genève 166.070 Caliber 565 – Hand-Wound Dress Watch with Original Crystal 

A late-1960s Omega automatic that has survived almost unused. Reference 166.070 is the Genève date watch collectors look for when they want a Seamaster-grade calibre in a clean dress case. This example is exceptionally good: the steel case is mint, with close to no usage marks and a presence that reads near NOS. The silver sunburst dial has no aging. The crystal is original. The bracelet is aftermarket mesh.

The Omega Genève Line

Omega first put “Genève” on dress watches in the early 1950s as a nod to observatory work in Geneva. By the late 1960s the name covered the brand’s volume mechanical line — still in-house movements, simpler styling than Seamaster or Constellation. By around 1970 Genève was a large share of Omega sales. The line ended in the late 1970s. 166.070 arrived about 1969: round steel case, date at 3, automatic winding. Same era as the hand-wound 135.041, but this reference is the self-winding date version.

Omega Classic Caliber 565

Most 166.070 pieces run Omega Caliber 565: automatic, 24 jewels, 19,800 bph, Incabloc, central seconds, hacking, and quick-set date (crown to the last position). Power reserve is about 48–50 hours. It is the same 550-family automatic used across Omega’s dress and professional watches of the period — a workhorse that watchmakers still like to service. (A few 166.070 examples are listed with Cal. 563, the 17-jewel date cousin; 565 is the usual specification.)

Our particular Omega Geneve Example

Stainless steel, about 35 mm across (roughly 40.5–41 mm lug-to-lug, 18 mm lugs, around 10.5–11 mm thick). Silver sunburst, applied batons, “T Swiss Made T” at 6, framed date. The case is mint — close to no usage marks, close to NOS. The dial shows no aging. Original crystal. Aftermarket mesh bracelet as photographed.

A Genève automatic in the condition these watches almost never keep: unused-looking steel, a fresh silver dial, and the original glass still in place.
