Samurai Vintage Co. started in 2018 as an enthusiast project: two collectors in Hong Kong who wanted to write about vintage watches, explain them properly, and put good examples on the wrist of people who thought vintage was only for big-budget Rolex money.
The shop came after the writing. Lunch-break conversations turned into listings. Listings turned into one of the few dealers in Asia whose primary focus is vintage Japanese watches — Seiko, King Seiko, Grand Seiko, Citizen, Orient — with a smaller bench of under-the-radar European pieces we actually like wearing. Since 2018 we have sold thousands of watches to new owners around the world.
What we believe
A vintage watch does not have to break the bank. It is a lifestyle object: something you put on in the morning, not a trophy you lock in a box. The 1960s through the early 1980s produced extraordinary craft at prices that, even now, can still be reachable if you know where to look and what to ignore.
That period’s finishing, proportions and movements deserve to be used. We would rather a King Seiko or a well-chosen Omega live on someone’s wrist than sit unsold as “investment.”
How we work
Every watch is hand-picked, one piece at a time. We do not buy bulk lots and flip them as-is. We inspect, describe the condition honestly, and get the movement running so the watch is ready to wear when it arrives — not “for parts or repair” with a pretty photo.
When a movement needs more than a basic check, we work with retired watchmakers who spent their careers inside Seiko’s factories in Japan. They know these calibres from the bench, not from a forum thread. That partnership is how we keep vintage Japanese pieces running as they were meant to, without pretending every watch leaves here as a full factory overhaul.
Being based in Hong Kong puts us close to the Japanese domestic market that still turns up the references collectors hunt: JDM Seiko, King Seiko, early quartz that was never meant for export. The European watches we take on are the same idea: character and craft, not hype.
Beside the watches we make leather straps in Hong Kong, so a vintage piece can leave here on something that fits it.
Why the writing still matters
The site began as a place to share what we were learning. That has not stopped. Guides, model histories and buying notes are still part of the shop, because a collector who understands a 6139 or a 5626 buys better — from us or from anyone else.
We want more people in this world, not fewer. If vintage only belongs to people who can spend five figures, the craft of those decades stays behind glass.
