Omega Constellation 168.017: Genta C-Shape Chronometer, Silver Dial, Fully Serviced
An Omega Constellation 168.017 is one of the sought-after C-shape models from the late 1960s: stainless steel, silver dial, Caliber 564 automatic chronometer. This one has a clean silver dial with no aging, a case in great condition for its age, and a movement just serviced. The date quick-set by crown pull still works. It wears the older applied Omega logo.
History of Omega Constellation line
Constellation was Omega’s chronometer line from 1952. Every piece carried the observatory medallion on the caseback and a certified automatic movement. Through the 1950s and 1960s it was the dress chronometer Omega sold against the Swiss competition. The early pieces used pie-pan dials. By the mid-1960s the case changed.
Genta and the C-shape
Gerald Genta redesigned the Constellation around 1959–1964. The C-shape — two curved sides that give the case its name — is one of his earliest major works. This is Genta's very early design work, he was still freelancing; the Royal Oak and Nautilus came later so this is one of the fisrt few renowed pieces that Genta designed. The C-case is where he first worked the integrated lug and flowing side profile that he carried into other brands. On the wrist the 168.017 is about 34.5–35 mm across, roughly 40–40.5 mm lug-to-lug, 19 mm lugs. It sits larger than a pie-pan of the same diameter because of the shape.
