Vintage Seiko Seikomatic 6206-8136: Open Dial, Dolphin Back, Mint Case

The 62-series is the automatic Seiko that everything later stood on. In the early 1960s Suwa needed a self-winding calibre that could live under a salaryman’s cuff all week. They built a family: 6201 time-only, 6205 date, 6206 day-date. Same layout language, same Diashock balance, same 18,000 bph. When Seiko decided Grand Seiko needed an automatic, they did not start from zero. They took that 62 architecture, raised the regulation and the finishing, and made 6245 and 6246 — the first automatic 62GS. A Seikomatic 6206 is not a copy of that Grand Seiko. It is the engine room that made it possible.

Seikomatic, Then 6206

Seikomatic was the name Seiko put on those early automatics: thin for the era, waterproof enough for daily life, sold as a proper business watch rather than a tool. Caliber 6206 is the Weekdater member of the line — 26 jewels, automatic (no hand-wind), Diashock, date at 3, full weekday at 6. It is a detuned, production-friendly descendant of the 33-jewel Cal. 400. Crowns stay small. The rotor does the work. By the mid-1960s this was one of the most common high-grade Japanese automatics on a wrist. A few years later the same cases often lost the Seikomatic script and became Business. The movement idea did not stop. It went upstairs into 62GS.

Why This 6206-8136 Is a Different Watch

Most 6206 dials we have sold wear a printed chapter ring — a minute track that frames the face and makes the markers sit inboard. This 8136 does not. There is no chapter ring at the edge. The indices run out toward the crystal. The silver surface reads larger than the millimetres suggest, almost all-dial, closer to a dress GS layout than to a busy Weekdater. That is the reason this listing exists. Same 6206, different face.

The case matches the rarity of that dial. Mirror and brush finishes are still on the steel — mint, not later polish pretending to be mint. The caseback still carries the dolphin. On 1960s Seiko that stamp marked a water-resistant construction (Water 30 Proof). On many 6206s it is already gone: polished flat, swapped, or worn to a ghost. This one still has the animal. That is the second thing that separates it from the 8070 and 8040 examples we have offered before.

Great mint condition. Original case geometry. Dolphin intact. Open dial with markers at the edge. The 6206 is running as a healthy mid-1960s automatic should.
