For many collectors, the 62 Grand Seiko is the prize of mid-1960s Seiko. The price of a strong 62GS now puts it out of reach for a lot of wrists. The smarter entry is the movement family that made it possible. The 62-series began as a reliable automatic workhorse in the Seikomatic line; Seiko later took that same architecture, raised the finishing and regulation, and built the first automatic Grand Seikos. From Seiko Weekdater to 62GS

Caliber 6206 arrived in the mid-1960s as the successor to the 400 Weekdater: 26 jewels, 18,000 bph, Diashock protection, automatic winding. It was produced in large numbers for salarymen who needed day, date and dependable timekeeping under a cuff. Full weekday at 6 o’clock and date at 3 is the classic Weekdater layout — information-rich without looking busy. By 1966 the Seikomatic name still sat on the dial; a year later many of these cases would be rebadged Business as Seiko reshuffled the range. The same 62 family would soon become 6245 and 6246 inside Grand Seiko. Owning a 6206-8070 is owning the foundation, not a copy of the finished monument.

A Case That Already Looks Like Grand Seiko

The 8070 case is one of the most appealing in the Seikomatic catalogue. Long, sloping lugs and a clean, almost bezel-less top give it the same quiet presence as early 62GS dress pieces.
