Vintage Grand Seiko 4522-7010: Brushed Cushion Case Hi-Beat Manual Wind from the 45GS Era

This 4522-7010 captures a distinctive chapter in Grand Seiko’s early story. Crafted around 1970 at the Daini factory, it belongs to the 45GS family — Seiko’s hand-wound high-beat response to the Swiss chronometer challenge and an internal counterpart to the more famous 61GS automatics. Where some siblings feature sharp, multi-plane faceting, this reference adopts a gentler cushion-shaped case finished entirely in brushed stainless steel. The result is a quieter, more wearable silhouette that still delivers the precision and refinement collectors expect from vintage Grand Seiko.

Powering the watch is the Caliber 4522A, a hand-finished manual-wind movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. The high frequency produces a beautifully smooth seconds hand and, paired with hacking and quick-set date, makes daily use genuinely practical. Because there is no automatic rotor, the watch sits noticeably lower and thinner on the wrist — a welcome trait for anyone who wears a dress shirt or prefers an elegant profile under a cuff.

The all-brushed cushion case measures 36 mm across with roughly 41 mm lug-to-lug and 18 mm lugs. Its soft curves and uniform brushed texture give the piece a modern, understated presence while preserving the original factory surfaces. This example has never been polished; the brushing remains crisp and consistent, with only light, honest marks from careful wear.
