Vintage Citizen Seven Star APSS 2902: Silver-Grey Day-Date, Sharp Case, Unaged Dial
Seven Star was Citizen’s practical automatic of the mid-1960s, built to sit next to Seiko 5 on a salaryman’s wrist. The name is usually read as seven working points: automatic winding, day, date, Parashock, Parawater, a jewelled movement, and a finished steel case. The range ran wide — slim dress pieces, Custom, Monthly, and a few real divers. This APSS 2902 is the dress face of that family, not the tool watch.
Citizen's Parawater Is Not a Diver
Parawater is Citizen’s own word, used from 1959, for a sealed case: gaskets at the crystal, caseback and crown. It is the ancestor of every later Citizen water-resistant watch, including the Seven Star compressor divers we have sold before (the dual-crown APSS-2812). On this Citizen Seven Star 2902 it does not mean a dive watch. There is no rotating bezel, no second crown, no compressor case. It is a round steel dress automatic that was built to survive rain and a washbasin, not a reef. Treat it as a vintage: do not swim with it. The point of the stamp is historical, not a modern depth rating.
The daydate layout: Day at 9, Date at 3
The layout is the Seven Star one collectors look for. Full weekday in a framed window at 9, date in its own window at 3, so the dial stays open instead of stacking both complications on one side. This example shows an English day wheel. Applied baton markers with lume plots, dauphine hands, and the small Seven Star shield above “21 JEWELS.” The dial is silver-grey sunburst and has not aged: no spots, no tropical shift, close to the face it left the factory with roughly fifty years ago.
Why Love This Citizen Case
The steel is the other half of the condition. Edges are still sharp. Mirror and brush have not been rounded off. That is rare on a dress Seven Star of this age, because these cases were worn, not stored. About 36–37 mm, 18 mm lugs — a true vintage dress size that still clears a cuff.
