Vintage Seiko 7A28-7090 “Yacht Timer” – The Holly Grail of vintage Seiko Chronograph and vintage watches  with Iconic Blue Segmented Regatta Dial (Fully Serviced)

Step into a pivotal chapter of horological history with this exceptional Seiko 7A28-7090 Yacht Timer. Produced as a short-run Japan Domestic Market (JDM) model in the early 1980s, this watch pairs Seiko’s groundbreaking 7A28 caliber — the world’s first analog quartz chronograph — with one of the most distinctive and colorful dials in the entire 7A28 family. Bold, asymmetrical, and instantly recognizable, it remains one of the most sought-after and elusive vintage Seiko references among collectors.

The Revolutionary 7A28 Movement

Launched in 1983, the Caliber 7A28 was Seiko’s confident answer to the quartz era. Far from a disposable module, this 15-jewel, all-metal movement was engineered with real serviceability in mind — separate stepper motors for each function, genuine split-timing capability, and chronograph precision down to 1/20th of a second. It delivered the tactile, repairable experience collectors loved in mechanical watches while offering quartz accuracy and reliability. The 7A28-7090 showcases this innovation in its purest, most visually striking form.

Iconic Seiko Yacht Timer Design & Regatta Inspiration

The 7A28-7090’s character is defined by its bead-blasted stainless steel case with strong asymmetry, oversized chronograph pushers, and a polished bezel — giving it an instrument-like, almost bullhead presence. At approximately 40 mm in diameter with 20 mm lug width and a slim ~9.6–12 mm profile, it wears with presence yet remains comfortable on the wrist.

The signature white dial is dominated by the vibrant blue segmented 30-minute subdial at 9 o’clock, divided into clear 5-minute blocks with a contrasting yellow chrono hand. The thoughtful use of different blue gradients adds beautiful texture and depth while keeping the overall look fresh and energetic. Light-blue “Yacht Timer” script completes the design. While the movement itself is a standard 7A28 chronograph (not a programmable countdown timer like later dedicated yacht models), the segmented register provides excellent practical legibility for timing sequences — exactly the visual language sailors and racing enthusiasts appreciate

A Rare Short-Production JDM Classic

The 7A28-7090 (sales code SAY080) appeared in 1984 Seiko Sports catalogs and disappeared shortly after — a true short-run reference. Its distinctive case shape was used on very few other 7A28 models, making it stand out even within an already respected family. Today it is genuinely scarce in strong condition and has earned a dedicated following as one of the most charismatic and historically significant vintage Seiko quartz chronographs.

Our Offering

This example has been professionally serviced by our trusted watchmaker ensuring the quartz movement is running perfectly after over 40 years of age.
