The Watch That Announced Seiko To The World – The Original 1964 Olympic World Time
This is not “just another vintage Seiko GMT”.
This is the very first one.
The grandfather of the 6117 Navigator Timer, the modern Alpinist GMTs – every Seiko traveller watch that came after owes its existence to the 6217-7000.
In 1964, Japan hosted the first Olympic Games ever held in Asia. Seiko was chosen as the official timekeeper – a massive honour that forced the company to completely revolutionise sports timing technology (quartz timing, automatic photo-finish cameras, the world’s first portable quartz clock, etc.). To commemorate the event and to gift to IOC members, Olympic officials, international journalists and VIPs, Seiko created this watch: the Seiko 6217-7000 World Time with its signature Olympic torch engraved caseback.
Only produced for roughly nine months (March to November 1964), it is one of the shortest-lived and lowest-production references Seiko ever made in the 1960s. Almost all were presentation pieces – never sold at retail. That is why even beaten-up examples command strong money today, and why a really good one is a once-every-few-years event.
The Seiko 6217 World Tim design was groundbreaking for 1964:
• True world-time function with 23-city rotating inner disc (operated by the crown at 4 o’clock)
• Independent 24-hour hand (the broad arrow) so you can track home time by operating the inner disc
• 18000bph automatic movement (the same Cal. 6217 that powered the very first 62MAS diver)
• 37.5 mm faceted case with a strong wrist present
The symbol of Japan rise again
This was Seiko flexing. Japan had risen from the ashes of war, hosted the Olympics, launched the Shinkansen bullet train the same week, and Seiko wanted the world to know they were now a horological superpower.
And This Example Is Stupidly Good
This Seiko 6217 world time is different, the Olympic torch on the caseback is razor-crisp – every flame, every line, every letter is factory-sharp. The case is completely unpolished with only the lightest honest marks from careful wear. The silver linen dial is literally flawless – no spots, no ageing, no damage, just pristine 1964 perfection. City disc colours still bright and unfaded. Original dauphine hands perfect. Even the domed acrylic crystal is excellent.
Movement (Cal. 6217A, 17 jewels) has just received a full service in Japan and is running brutally strong.
