The 45KS is the generation that came out of that fight. The first year was a humiliation. In 1964 Suwa finished 144th and Daini 153rd; neither batch even qualified as chronometers. The brief after that was simple: raise the beat, master the balance spring, and come back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThey did. High-frequency balances (10 beats per second and, in the special contest pieces, even faster) plus better hairspring theory flipped the table in three years. By 1967 Daini took 2nd and Suwa 3rd in the company prize at Neuchâtel; Daini’s contest calibre 052 placed as high as 4th against the best Swiss mechanicals. In 1968 the Neuchâtel wristwatch contest was cancelled. Seiko went to Geneva instead. Suwa’s mechanical entries took 4th through 10th — the top mechanical scores that year — with a record 58.19 points for a mechanical wristwatch. First to third at Geneva were Swiss quartz prototypes. The mechanical podium was Japanese.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThose contest movements were not this production 4502. They were purpose-built observatory calibres. What came home to the factory was the knowledge: 36,000 bph, tighter regulation, and a production 45-series family that could be sold. Daini put that work into Grand Seiko 45GS (4520 \/ 4522 \/ later 4580 V.F.A.) and into King Seiko 45KS (4500 no-date, 4502 date). In 1968–70 Daini also sent production 45-series movements back to Neuchâtel for certification; 226 passed and were sold as Seiko Astronomical Observatory Chronometers. The Seiko Museum is blunt about the rest: the precision learned in Switzerland was applied to Grand Seiko and King Seiko.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eSo a 4502-7000 is not an observatory prize watch. This example has just been fully serviced by our watchmaker in Japan and is keeping excellent time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe 7000 Case and This Dial\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"auto\"\u003eThe 4502-7000 is the earlier 45KS shape: planes and elongated lugs, closer to Grammar of Design than the later cushion 7010. About 36.5 mm, 41.5 mm lug-to-lug, 18 mm lugs, roughly 9 mm thick. This dial is the reason to buy this one — perfect silver sunburst, no aging, no patina, no reprint. The case has never been polished. Factory brush and mirror work remain.
